As I Am Double Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer Review

I recently went on a hair product run, and as any curly-hair girl knows, it's sometimes hard to keep straight which products work, which don't, and what we like about each. I've decided to do a series of hair moisturizers and defining gels partially just to keep my own thoughts straight about the products I like and will buy again. I'm trying to actually create a regimen for myself that will help my hair grow and give me confidence about wearing it naturally.

Hopefully this will also be helpful to other people who are trying to figure out what works for them.

So.

I've separated the products into leave-in conditioners and gels: basically creamy moisturizing products and more gel-like defining products, even though there is some overlap in the function of each.

I have six conditioners and six gels that I will rate based on Moisture, Scent, Definition, Smoothness, Longevity, and Texture. By moisture I mean how the product moisturizes my hair. Scent is obviously the fragrance, how pleasant and how lasting it is. The definition is how defined and well-formed my hair curls are with it ( I will try to rate this based on applying the product wet/damp and dry.) I'll rate the smoothness versus frizzyness of the overall look, which is similar to definition, but in my mind that includes how the edges lay, etc. I will also rate how long the effects of the product seem to last (longevity) and the softness or texture that it gives my hair.

The first product that I'm going to rate is the As I Am Double Butter cream. I've actually used this product quite a bit in the past and just recently purchased a larger jar. I've almost finished the 8oz and have now committed to the 16oz because I liked the softening and moisturizing effect of this cream so much. However, I've rarely used it by itself. I usually apply it in conjunction with several other products.

Today I applied the Double Butter Cream immediately after washing and deep conditioning my hair. The only other product I applied is Shea Moisture's 100% pure argan oil.

The double butter cream has a light, fluffy texture and has a light vanilla scent. It's a little bit like whipped icing when applying it to hair.

The scent doesn't really linger as the hair dries, and I did notice that the moisturizing effect is more dramatic when the cream is applied to dry hair versus wet. The instructions on the jar don't actually call for applying to wet or damp hair, which I haven't seen very often in a leave-in or daily moisturizer.

"Directions: Apply sparingly or liberally depending upon your hair's need for moisture, manageability and vitality. Rub within palms and scrunch onto hair gently so that coils and curls are undisturbed. May also be used to set soft lustrous twists and twist-outs."

As my hair is drying I can see the curls setting in defined smooth groups that are soft to the touch.

My roots and edges don't feel particularly smooth even though my hair has been tied back in a scarf and braids. I like this product as a moisturizer but the effects are light, not dramatic when applied to wet hair. When I apply it to dry hair it's instantly softening, but not defining. Overall my hair does feel nourished, but I am not particularly happy with the effect as a setting or curling product. My hair is still curling a lot but a lot of the hair is individualized not defined.

These are the two sizes for the Double Butter Cream:

I also used this product in conjunction with the As I Am curling jelly which I will review next.

Carol's Daughter Almond Milk (ultra-nourishing hair mask) Review

Welcome to Not About the Jherli, a blog that covers beauty products, writing techniques, and self-care in general.

Today I'm reviewing a new product- Carol's Daughter Almond Milk Ultra-Nourishing Hair Mask. This is the first hair mask I've used in a while, and it is my first time using Carol's Daughter products other than the Black Vanilla Moisture and Shine Pure Hair Oil which I did not like.

My hair is relatively healthy aside from my deep-conditioning neglect. I have never chemically straightened my hair. I might blow-dry or flat iron it every 2-3 months.

However.

I did color treat it for the first time 5 months ago and I've been concerned about hydrating it and repairing any damage ever since.

So. Here is the product:

I used a Softhood dryer attachment (also for the first time) to help the mask be more effective. I've been old that this opens the follicle and helps the product penetrate your hair. I did feel more tingling after doing this for about 8-10 minutes.

This hair mask suds up a lot more than I've seen in a conditioner but it was nice to know I'd thoroughly coated my hair. I may have used too much of the product since I'm used to a deep conditioner not really spreading through my hair easily, so knowing a little goes a long way was nice.

There wasn't a lot of slip in the product so when I used my Denman brush to distribute it, I felt that it took a little longer than usual.

When I rinsed my hair I initially felt like there hadn't been much of a change. My hair still felt dry and a little on the coarse side. I conditioned my hair with Frizz-Ease Repair conditioner and once I rinsed that out I immediately felt that my hair was much softer and felt more nourished than when I just shampoo it.

The scent is very almond-sweet but light, which is nice, and it lingers after you've rinsed.

I will definitely use this product again, but I'm not extremely thrilled with the results. It is noticeably nourishing, but not as dramatic an improvement as I would like considering the price of the product and the amount of time I left it in- about 30 mins total.

Carol's Daughter Almond Milk Ultra-Nourishing Hair Mask retails at about $12.00 for 12 oz (or $11.90 at most stores.) I bought mine at Target.
